A Day with Bernie Sanders

I was invited by Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign to document his stop in East Los Angeles. I was not invited as press, but as a trusted visual storyteller.
At a time when mainstream media coverage often misrepresented him, the campaign made it clear: they didn’t want a sanitized press image. They wanted honesty. Realness.
I was granted full access, front row, no restrictions. My assignment was simple: capture what I saw. The crowd, the energy, the people who showed up. The day wasn’t about optics. It was about truth. And that’s rare in politics.
Alongside still photographs, I created a video featuring activist Philip Agnew’s speech weaving together photojournalism and mixed media to tell a fuller story of the moment.
This project wasn’t about selling an image. It was about documenting a movement. One that challenged power, defied the status quo, and inspired a new generation.
